"I was glad when they said to me, Let us go to the house of the Lord!" (Psalm 122:1) Christian pilgrimage is not obligatory as in Islam, but deeply valued. Jerusalem, Rome and Santiago de Compostela are classic destinations. Lourdes, Fátima and Guadalupe attract millions. The external journey reflects internal transformation. "We are pilgrims and strangers in this land." Source

"The Hajj to Mecca is the duty of every capable Muslim at least once in his life." (Fifth Pillar) Hajj is an obligatory pillar of Islam for those who have health and resources. Millions converge on Mecca annually. The rituals remember Abraham, Hagar and Ishmael. Umrah (minor pilgrimage) can be done at any time. Everyone wears white ihram—equal before Allah. Source

"The whole of India is a tirth (land of pilgrimage)." (Hindu tradition) Hinduism has thousands of sacred sites. Varanasi, Haridwar, Puri, Rameswaram are especially important. The Char Dham (four abodes) are the goal of many devotees. Sacred rivers like the Ganges purify. Pilgrimage (tirtha yatra) can atone for sins. Source

"After I leave, visit Lumbini, Bodh Gaya, Sarnath and Kushinagar." (Attributed to Buddha) The four holy places in Buddhism are: birth (Lumbini), enlightenment (Bodh Gaya), first sermon (Sarnath) and death (Kushinagar). The pilgrimage is not obligatory, but it inspires and deepens faith. The journey to Mount Kailash is shared with Hindus. Source

"The Sacred Mountains are abodes of immortals and sources of power." (Chinese tradition) China has five sacred Taoist mountains and four sacred Buddhist mountains. Tai Shan, Hua Shan, Wudang Shan have attracted pilgrims for millennia. The ascent is a metaphor for spiritual ascension. Confucian temples in Qufu (home of Confucius) are also destinations. Source

"The terrain is Africa in Brazil." (Candomblé saying) In Candomblé and Umbanda, the houses of saints (terreiros) are sacred places of pilgrimage. Historic temples such as the White House in Salvador are cultural heritage. Visiting traditional terreiros means seeking roots and blessings. In Africa, Yoruba sacred sites such as Ile-Ifé (holy city), Osogbo (Oxum forest), and others attract pilgrims. Returning to Africa is a spiritual pilgrimage for many. Source

"If someone goes to Haridwar with an impure mind, what is the use?" (Guru Nanak) Sikh Gurus criticized empty pilgrimage, but the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) in Amritsar is deeply revered. The Five Takhts are centers of authority. Pilgrimage with correct devotion is valued. Pangat (eating together in the langar) is as important there as prayer. Source

"Three times a year every man shall appear before the Lord your God." (Deuteronomy 16:16) Before the destruction of the Temple, Pesach, Shavuot, and Sukkot required pilgrimage (aliyah le-regel) to Jerusalem. Today, the Western Wall is the holiest accessible site. Tombs of tzaddikim (saints) also attract pilgrims. Aliyah (immigration to Israel) is a modern form of "pilgrimage". Source

"The pilgrimage to the Shrine of the Báb and the House of Bahaullah is obligatory for anyone who can." (Kitab-i-Aqdas) The Bahai (Hajj) pilgrimage is to Haifa/Acre in Israel—where the shrines of the Báb and Bahaullah are located. It's a must-do once in a lifetime for anyone who can afford it. The Mount Carmel Gardens are a world heritage site. It is an experience of profound spiritual renewal. Source

"Fire temples are the heart of the Zoroastrian community." (Zoroastrian tradition) The most sacred fire temples (Atash Behram) are in India—especially in Udvada and Yazd in Iran. The sacred fire in some temples has been burning for centuries. The visit is reverence, not "pilgrimage" in the Islamic sense. Chakeshgar (sacred circuits) are practiced in towers. Source

"Ziggurats are stairs to heaven." (Sumerian tradition) Ziggurats (stepped pyramid-shaped temples) were centers of pilgrimage. Each city-state had its patron god and ziggurat. That of Ur (lunar god Nanna) was especially famous. Religious festivals attracted pilgrims from all over the region. Source

"Temples are homes of the gods on earth." (Egyptian tradition) The ancient Egyptians made pilgrimages to the great temples—Karnak, Luxor, Abydos (tomb of Osiris). Festivals like Opet attracted crowds. Common people worshiped in the outer parts of temples. Abydos was especially sacred—many wanted to be buried near Osiris. Source
